Meaningful Journey Flags

In January 2108 we launched Studio MA, bringing our design portfolio under the Misc Adventures banner alongside the shop and workshops. Miscellaneous Adventures has always been a way for us to combine our interests of nature, creativity and adventure, making them a part of our work; the studio takes this one step further, and gives us the opportunity to create work inspired by the things we do, not only for ourselves but also for clients, particularly those who share our passions and ethos. Up until January 2018, Andrew worked solo as a freelance illustrator whilst we ran Miscellaneous Adventures together. Another reason for creating the Studio was to enable us to also work together creatively, combining Andrew’s illustration work with Emma’s background in graphic design and textiles.

As a way to celebrate the formation of the studio we set ourselves the brief of creating a series of handmade flags based on landscapes or places we have travelled that hold meaning for us. When looking for a suitable fabric to make them from, we immediately thought of asking our friends at Millican if they had any offcuts from their bags that we could use, therefore repurposing rather than buying new, something that we felt would fit well with both ours and Millican’s ethos. Fortunately, the guys at Millican were down with the idea and soon after, a parcel full of recycled bionic canvas arrived at our door. We also decided to use the name ‘Meaningful Journey’ to tie in with Millican’s film series as it also perfectly reflected the idea behind our flags, a nice way to tie both projects together.

Dictated by the colour palette of fabric we had, Andrew created four landscape illustrations using bold shapes and features. These shapes were then transferred to fabric, cut out and appliquéd onto a larger background piece by Emma. Each flag was finished with a contrasting border, brass rivets to hang them and an embroidered MA label.

We are really pleased with how the flags have turned out and will be taking them to events and workshops as well as hanging one in our newly finished self built Micro Studio Cabin (more to come on this soon!). Although we’ll be keeping hold of these, we’re happy to take commissions for similar projects, so do get in touch if you’d like to work with us.
